Off-the-Shelf “Human” Tissue for Reconstructing Urethra Narrowing: Dr. Eva-Maria Balet, Regenosca

Alex Jani: interviewing visionaries of healthcare innovation

It is not human tissue, i.e., it doesn’t come from a human
but it is recognized by the body and well-tolerated.

In effect, patients undergoing urethral stricture reconstruction have better recovery and less pain.

In this episode, you will hear about

  • regenerative medicine
  • urethral stricture symptoms
  • a scaffold that attracts the patients’ own cells surrounding the removed tissue and stimulates regeneration
  • how it dissolves itself, when the job is done

My guest, Dr. Eva-Maria Balet, is a co-founder and CEO of Regenosca. She’s a biotechnologist with a PhD in Life Sciences from EPFL, a public research university in Lausanne. She has focused her research on scaffold design.

Regenosca is a Swiss startup developing TissueSpan mesh – a technology platform to create regenerative, off-the-shelf meshes for soft tissue repair. Their first indication is urethral stricture – first-in-human implantations show shorter surgery time and less pain for patients.
